Om tre uger vil jorden blive tilintetgjort af en gigantisk meteor, og i panik over dette faktum forlades Dodge af sin kone. Ulykkelig over bruddet og udsigten til klodens snarlige udslettelse sidder han alene tilbage i sin lejlighed – lige indtil naboen Penny dukker op udenfor hans vindue. Penny er en sorgløs og temmelig verdensfjern brite, og Dodge finder ud af, at hun gennem længere tid har modtaget hans post. I bunken ligger et meget interessant brev fra en gammel ekskæreste, som gerne vil mødes med ham før det er for sent. Tynget af skyld over at have skjult brevet, beslutter Penny sig for at hjælpe Dodge med at opspore eks'en. Det umage par begiver sig nu ud på et mærkværdigt roadtrip – i en verden hvor ingen regler længere gælder og hvor radioen fejrer den nærtstående katastrofe med alle tiders største rockklassikere.
